Constantino Declares Victory in NY-21 GOP Primary
Constantino defeated Robert Smullen after a bitter primary marked by legal threats and a split GOP, CBS News projects.
- On Tuesday, political newcomer Anthony Constantino won the GOP primary for New York's 21st Congressional District, defeating state assemblyman Robert Smullen with 59.3% of the vote after more than 95 percent were counted, CBS News projects.
- While Smullen held the support of the New York State GOP Committee and 13 of the 15 county Republican committees, Constantino secured backing from President Donald Trump and Congressman Jim Jordan.
- To curry favor with the president, Constantino presented a bronze statue to Trump last year and erected a "Vote for Trump" sign at his headquarters. Trump praised him as a "Great Supporter" on Truth Social.
- Despite the primary loss, Smullen remains on the Conservative Party line for the November ballot, creating potential for a split ticket that could complicate the Republican Party's hold on the seat in the general election.
- The seat opened after Representative Elise Stefanik, who represented the district since 2015, announced her bid for New York governor. Following the primary, Stefanik and the New York State GOP Committee officially threw their support behind Constantino.
