Amnesty International Slams Pakistan for Using Anti-Terror Laws to Crush Baloch Voices - The Statesman
BALOCHISTAN, PAKISTAN, JUL 17 – Amnesty International highlights misuse of anti-terror laws to detain peaceful Baloch activists and reports over 2,300 enforced disappearances in 2024, urging Pakistan to end repression.
- Pakistani authorities have held Baloch Yakjehti Committee leaders, including Dr. Mahrang Baloch, since March 2025, detaining them under a law that allows for arrest and imprisonment of individuals considered a threat to public order during protests in Quetta.
- These detentions followed peaceful protests against enforced disappearances amid a broader crackdown in Balochistan that uses anti-terror and public order laws to suppress dissent.
- The detained activists face extended remands with no formal charges, while Amnesty International has called for their immediate release and condemned ongoing arbitrary detention and harassment.
- Amnesty International highlighted Pakistan’s use of outdated colonial laws to detain peaceful activists and called on the international community to hold Pakistan accountable, emphasizing that the country should not be permitted to violate basic human rights without consequences.
- The detention and deaths, including that of activist Kareem Jan who was forcibly disappeared in February 2025, exemplify continuing repression and raise serious concerns about activists' safety and rights in Balochistan.
