Amazon enlists AI to help shoppers overwhelmed by too many choices

  • Amazon launched "Interests," an AI-powered tool designed to help users find new items by matching their needs based on user prompts, with examples being 'Model building kits and accessories for hobbyist engineers and designers' and 'Brewing tools and gadgets for coffee lovers'.
  • Amazon, aiming to enhance the shopping experience and increase convenience for customers, is rolling out Interests to a small subset of U.S. Customers on its iOS and Android apps and mobile website, with plans to expand to all U.S. Customers in the coming months.
  • Interests functions by continuously scanning Amazon's store and employing large language models to translate everyday language into queries that traditional search engines use to generate product recommendations, proactively notifying users about new and relevant products, restocks, and deals.
  • According to Amazon, Interests will "automatically translate everyday language into queries and attributes that traditional search engines can process and turn into product recommendations," accessible through the "Me" tab in the Amazon Shopping app.
  • As Amazon rolls out AI-driven services like Interests and Alexa+, Adobe research indicates that consumers are increasingly relying on generative AI for shopping, with traffic from generative AI sources increasing by 1,200% since July 2024, particularly for electronics and jewelry, and 87% of surveyed U.S. Consumers saying they are more likely to use AI for larger or more complex purchases.
