Amazon Apology After Businesswoman Not Allowed to Bring Breastfed-Baby to Course
Amazon said its site access policy was not clearly communicated and invited Bews to a future event after she had already travelled to attend.
On Tuesday, Amazon apologized after Rachael Bews, CEO of Nu Coton, was barred from bringing her five-month-old daughter to a business course in Dunfermline, Fife.
Amazon officials stated "for health and safety reasons, we are unable to allow children under the age of six" on any fulfilment centre sites, though Bews intended for her husband to care for the infant elsewhere on the 1,000,000 square ft campus.
After spending £80 on train tickets, Bews was turned away, stating "the practical outcome is that I can't take part on the first day," despite having informed Amazon of her exclusive breastfeeding needs in advance.
Amazon stated it is "reviewing our communications process to prevent this from happening again" and invited Bews to a future event, while noting it provides paid lactation breaks and private rooms.
Writing on LinkedIn, Bews expressed frustration: "We've travelled the length of the country, and now I can't participate," while calling for organizations to make leadership programs accessible to breastfeeding parents.
