Alicante airport shut down as police descend and UK flights diverted
The drone sighting triggered a multi-hour shutdown that diverted six flights and prompted an investigation by Spain’s Civil Guard to enforce strict no-drone regulations.
- On Monday night , Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport suspended operations after a drone was detected in its airspace, halting arrivals and departures.
- Aena said `purely for safety reasons` when it suspended operations and contacted the Civil Guard, which launched an investigation into the drone sighting; Spanish law prohibits drones near airports with fines of up to 225,000.
- Ground staff assisted stranded passengers as diversions and cancellations spread, with officials confirming nine planes diverted so far after the drone sighting at Alicante-Elche Airport.
- While the shutdown caused no injuries or material damage, it exposed vulnerability to drone incursions; Aena posted on X urging travellers to check with their airline as diversions occurred and worked with Security Forces to restore operations.
- Aviation authorities across Europe are pressing for tighter controls and improved drone-detection systems, as similar closures in Madrid, Lisbon and London show this is a wider European problem.
