Alfalfa Sprouts Linked to ‘Unusual’ Salmonella Strain
- On Friday, health authorities issued a nationwide recall of Parilla Fresh alfalfa sprouts sold at Woolworths and Coles across Australia except Western Australia and Tasmania with use-by dates up to and including November 20, 2025.
- A joint investigation by health and food regulators found an increase in infections from the unusual Salmonella Havana strain linked to Parilla Fresh alfalfa sprouts, prompting a voluntary recall.
- Queensland Health advised that `Symptoms usually start six to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria and usually last for four to seven days`, and health authorities warned some patients may need antibiotics or hospital care.
- At least 44 people across Australia have fallen ill, including 15 cases in Queensland, and Food Standards Australia New Zealand urged consumers affected by the recall to return products for a full refund.
- Authorities say the probe continues and more tests are underway, with the ACT government and state health authorities urging consumers to monitor symptoms and Glasgow warning, `There is a risk that if these affected alfalfa sprouts are consumed you could become ill`.
