Detained immigrants at ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ say there are worms in food and wastewater on the floor
FLORIDA EVERGLADES, JUL 14 – Detainees at the Florida Everglades facility report maggot-infested food, 24/7 bright lights, and denied medical care while officials block unannounced oversight visits, raising human rights concerns.
- On July 3, 2025, authorities received the first detainees at Alligator Alcatraz, a $450 million Everglades facility nicknamed for its alligator-infested surroundings.
- Funded by emergency state and federal allocations, established as part of the Republican administration’s push to increase U.S. migrant detention capacity.
- Speaking from the facility, La/Figura said, `There’s no water to take a bath, it’s been four days since I’ve taken a bath,` while he added `They only brought a meal once a day, and it had maggots.`
- In response, officials said `All of those allegations from the violent criminal detainee cited are untrue. The facility meets all state and federal obligations for detentions`.
- In letters to state and federal officials, Mayor Levine Cava called for oversight access to 'Alligator Alcatraz,' requesting weekly reports and scheduled site visits.
