Alabamans to choose nominees for US Senate as voting maps in flux
The Senate race could go to a June 16 runoff as redistricting leaves four congressional district results subject to later changes.
On Tuesday, Alabama Republicans are casting ballots in a competitive Senate primary to succeed Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor this year.
Although primary voting is underway in all seven congressional districts, Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen said results in four districts will be "void for the purposes of determining the party nominees," with special elections scheduled for Aug. 11.
President Donald Trump endorsed Rep. Barry Moore, a Freedom Caucus member, calling him "one of my all time favorites" and a "totally reliable MAGA Warrior," as the crowded field may necessitate a June 16 runoff.
Separately, the attorney general race features a contentious fight among former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell, Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey, and Katherine Robertson, with an outside group criticizing Mitchell over an IVF ruling.
Groups including The NAACP Legal Defense Find continue challenging the new congressional map in court, while Tuberville and former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones could face each other again in the gubernatorial race.
