Akash exported to 3 countries; Armenia, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan now boast of India-made missile system

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh projects national defence exports to reach Rs 50,000 crore within two years amid ongoing efforts to secure a strategic global market foothold.

  • On Thursday, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh announced India has exported its indigenous Akash air-defence system to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, expanding upon earlier sales to Armenia.
  • Singh described the Akash as one of India's defence-sector success stories, reflecting the maturation of indigenous missile design and production capabilities. Developed by The DRDO, the system includes built-in protection against electronic jamming.
  • During Operation Sindoor in May 2025, Akash demonstrated strong performance countering drone and missile attacks from Pakistan. The system operates across 4.5km to 25km range, engaging aerial targets between 100 metres and 20 km altitude.
  • Akash Prime, an upgraded version, successfully destroyed two high-speed unmanned aerial targets during high-altitude trials in Ladakh, demonstrating capability above 4,500 metres. India continues supplying these systems to the Indian Armed Forces.
  • At the 13th PAFI Annual Forum 2026, Singh identified cost advantage as a key strength for Indian defence exports. The government expects total defence exports to reach Rs 50,000 crore over the next two years.
