Air India's Mumbai-based pilot dies during Delhi layover
Air India said it is supporting the pilot’s family after the Mumbai-based crew member was found unconscious and declared dead at a hospital.
- On Friday evening, 46-year-old Mumbai-based Captain Sunny Sharad Asaldekar died of a suspected cardiac arrest at The Grand Hotel in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.
- Asaldekar, who checked into the hotel on Thursday, was undergoing conversion training for Boeing 787 aircraft and scheduled to operate a flight early Saturday morning.
- His brother contacted the hotel manager Friday evening after receiving no response to calls. Staff opened the room with the hotel master key, finding Asaldekar unconscious and unresponsive.
- Delhi Police are conducting inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS following a post-mortem examination at Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday. Air India said it is "deeply saddened" by the loss.
- Previously working with Air India Express before moving to Air India, Asaldekar was remembered by colleagues as "a wonderful human being" and "a respected leader.
