Air India Warns of Possible Disruptions to A350 Routes After Jet Suffers Engine Damage

Air India's Airbus A350 engine was damaged by a cargo container during taxiing in dense fog, grounding the aircraft and risking disruptions on key international routes, the airline said.

  • On Jan 15, Air India Flight AI101, an Airbus A350 , ingested a baggage container while taxiing at Delhi Airport, damaging its right engine after returning due to Iranian airspace closure.
  • After returning from its diverted routing, Flight AI101 landed in Delhi where groundhandling operations could be at fault for not respecting yellow apron markings near aircraft.
  • Ground teams moved the aircraft to a designated parking stand after metal pieces were cleared, and all passengers and crew on board remained safe, Air India said.
  • Air India warned some A350 services could be disrupted and is arranging alternatives and refunds for affected passengers, operating six Airbus A350s on long‑haul routes including New York, London, and Newark.
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has opened a probe into the engine ingestion, amid recent airspace disruptions including a January 14 Dreamliner technical return by Flight AI2380.
