Italy's Meloni says she has been denounced to ICC for complicity in genocide
The complaint alleges Italy's government supported Israel's Gaza offensive, with Gaza health authorities reporting over 67,000 deaths amid the conflict, according to the court filing.
- On Tuesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she and two ministers were reported to the International Criminal Court for alleged complicity in genocide linked to Israel's Gaza offensive, naming Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and possibly Roberto Cingolani of Leonardo.
- Critics argue that Italy's government support for Israel fuels alleged complicity amid Gaza health authorities reporting 67,173 killed and 169,780 injured since October 7, 2023.
- Public protests and corporate statements show Italy has seen a string of demonstrations over the last week, while Leonardo rejected complicity claims after Cingolani's interview last month.
- Diplomatic fallout is visible as Israel denies the accusations and the denunciation was lodged at the International Criminal Court.
- Rejecting the complaint, Giorgia Meloni, Italian Prime Minister, said she was 'amazed' and noted Italy has not authorised new arms supplies after October 7, adding `I don't believe there is another case like this in the world or in history`.
