Afghanistan Sack T20 Captain Rashid After World Cup Exit

Ibrahim Zadran takes over the T20I captaincy as Afghanistan revealed squads for the Sri Lanka series scheduled between March 13 to 25, replacing Rashid Khan.
Following Afghanistan national cricket team's group-stage exit from the 2026 T20 World Cup, chief selector Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil said the move fits a long-term strategic vision amid the appointment of a new head coach.
Selectors dropped Fazalhaq Farooqi, Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Ishaq, naming Noor Rahman, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Fareed Malik, and Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi for the ODI squad, with Sami retained after last year’s five-wicket haul.
The ACB said it is closely monitoring the West Asia crisis and engaging stakeholders about the series, with a final decision expected in a couple of days.
Despite the captaincy shift, Zadran has led Afghanistan 11 times and is the fourth-highest T20I run-scorer with 1865 runs, following Rashid Khan’s milestone of 700 T20 wickets.
