Adults only: Brentwood Bay hotel's bold move raises questions

GREATER VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 25 – The policy aims to provide a child-free environment for guests seeking relaxation, with at least four community members voicing concerns about the 16+ age limit, officials said.

  • In January 2025, Brentwood Bay Resort and Spa enforced an adults-only policy at the Arbutus Room & Bar in Greater Victoria, following its shift to a fully adult-focused property.
  • As one of only two adults-only boutique hotels in Greater Victoria, Brentwood Bay Resort and Spa aligned its Arbutus Room & Bar with its branding, driven by Christopher Judge, and many parents come for weekend escapes, according to Natasha Richardson.
  • On July 18, an anonymous resident posted on Facebook to notify the community about the restriction, which prevented her from booking for her daughter's 16th birthday, Christopher Judge said at least four community members contacted the resort before the post.
  • Responding to feedback, Christopher Judge said `to anyone who's been less than thrilled with this , we are not anti-children,` noting the resort's commitment to community with the family-friendly The Pub.
  • Looking ahead, Natasha Richardson said, 'When you research us or you pull us up on a listing, it says Brentwood Bay Resort and the tagline of adult only 16+ is right there, so there's no question,' indicating future transparency about the policy.
