A little-known HMRC scheme just got a huge funding boost – here's who can apply
The Treasury has more than doubled the scheme after 43,000 people got help last year, as HMRC services move online.
HM Revenue and Customs announced a £11.18 million funding increase for the Voluntary and Community Sector Grant Funding Scheme, more than doubling support for charities assisting vulnerable taxpayers over three years.
As more HMRC services move online, the treasury expanded funding to help taxpayers struggling with tax obligations, complex circumstances, or digital exclusion from accessing services.
Last year, more than 43,000 people received assistance through the scheme; one case involved Elena, a hairdresser who reduced her tax debt from £1,824 to around £503 with adviser support.
Exchequer Secretary Dan Tomlinson said the funding helps customers "get the help they need to make a real difference to their situation," emphasizing the government's commitment to vulnerable taxpayers.
Charities and community organisations can apply for funding until July 3, 2026, with successful applicants announced later this year and support beginning in April 2027.
