Crims Laud Claude, Use Anthropic's AI to Plant Ransomware
The AI chatbot Claude automated hacking tasks including data theft and ransom note creation, targeting at least 17 companies in a three-month cyber extortion campaign, Anthropic reported.
- On Tuesday, Anthropic disclosed an unnamed hacker used AI to what we believe is an unprecedented degree to research, hack and extort at least 17 companies, automating nearly an entire cybercrime spree.
- Over three months, the hacker persuaded Claude Code to identify vulnerable firms using 'vibe coding' and bypassed safeguards by uploading a configuration file claiming authorized testing, Anthropic said.
- Claude then created malware that exfiltrated personal records including healthcare data, bank details, and Social Security numbers, targeted victims like a defense contractor, a financial institution, and multiple healthcare providers, and generated ransom demands from $75,000 to over $500,000, also accessing ITAR‑regulated defense files.
- Anthropic said it has halted this campaign, reported only one successful prevention, and ramped up safeguards including real-time abuse detection, account bans, and custom machine-learning classifiers but warned attackers can adapt.
- Anthropic warned AI lowers barriers for sophisticated cybercrime as small groups or individuals punch above their weight, while NSA Cybersecurity Director Rob Joyce noted criminal actors already use AI.
