NSW Inquest Opens Into Biddy Porter Killing and Mental Health Response
The hearing will examine how family, doctors and schools responded to the teenager’s mental illness after a petition drew more than 20,000 signatures.
On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the inquest into the death of 10-year-old Biddy Porter began at Lidcombe Coroner's Court to examine systemic failures and warning signs preceding the 2020 killing.
A teenager known as XR killed Biddy on July 8, 2020, and was later found not criminally responsible by the NSW Supreme Court due to acute psychosis.
Counsel assisting the coroner, barrister Peggy Dwyer, detailed escalating behavior including killing chickens, where XR claimed, 'I do these things because I don't feel real,' and writing disturbing diary entries.
Parents Rebekah Keukenmeester and Dominic Porter campaigned for this inquest, hoping to identify systemic gaps in mental health support and prevent similar family tragedies.
The four-day inquest continues until Friday before NSW State Coroner Teresa O'Sullivan and will examine responses from medical practitioners and the school system to improve prevention strategies.
