The deadliest airplane crash in Hermantown's history happened two decades before the city was officially incorporated. Nine members of the Minnesota Air National Guard's 179th Squadron, one U.S. Air Force captain and a retired National Guard colonel died. They were on a routine training mission in a C-47 Skytrain "Gooney Bird" to pick up some K-14 sights.
