Iran’s parliament used a 2019 law to label EU militaries as terrorist groups following the EU’s designation of the IRGC amid protests that killed thousands, officials said.
- On Feb 1, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf announced Iran now considers all EU militaries to be terrorist groups after a Sunday session in Tehran.
- Responding to the EU's designation on Thursday, Iranian officials cited a 2019 law allowing reciprocal action by Iran, as Qalibaf announced all EU armies are now considered terrorist groups.
- Invoking domestic law, Ghalibaf said that under "Article 7 of the Law on Countermeasures Against the Declaration of the IRGC as a Terrorist Organisation, the armies of European countries are considered terrorist groups."
- While no immediate steps were announced, officials said the classification carries legal and political weight under Iranian law and the national security parliamentary commission will consider expelling EU countries' military attaches, coordinating with the Iranian foreign ministry.
- Amid a US naval buildup and repeated threats, Iranian leaders including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned a US attack would spark regional conflict as protests have caused 3,117 to 6,713 deaths.
