UK confirms joint airstrike targeting suspected ISIS weapons facility in Syria

The strike targeted an underground IS weapons cache near Palmyra using precision-guided bombs, with initial assessments showing success and no civilian harm, the UK Ministry of Defence said.

  • On Saturday, Britain's Ministry of Defence said Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4 jets, supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker, were joined by French aircraft in striking an underground facility north of Palmyra.
  • Intelligence analysis identified the facility as likely used to store weapons and explosives, and the strike forms part of continuing allied efforts to prevent the Islamic State group’s resurgence.
  • The Ministry of Defence said its aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike access tunnels, and officials reported a detailed assessment is under way with initial indications of success.
  • British Defence Secretary John Healey said `I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage`.
  • Following the December 13 attack, allied forces intensified strikes as the United Nations reports Islamic State still commands between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters across Syria and Iraq.
