US Announces New 25% Tariffs on Brazil for ‘Unfair’ Trade Practices
The United States will impose a 25% tariff on most Brazilian imports starting July 22 following a year-long Section 301 investigation into alleged unfair trade practices.
Thousands of Brazilian goods will face tariffs, including sugar, machinery, apparel, and steel, with exemptions for coffee, beef, aircraft parts, and energy products to protect critical U.S. supply chains.
Brazil strongly denied the allegations, with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva calling the tariffs unjustified and pledging to challenge them at the World Trade Organization while continuing negotiations.
The U.S. Trade Representative noted that Brazil's preferential tariff treatments with Mexico and India disadvantage U.S. exporters, and Washington remains open to negotiations if Brazil makes changes.
