THAILAND AND CAMBODIA BORDER, JUL 30 – The ceasefire follows a China-mediated dialogue to resolve border clashes triggered by a landmine injury, with leaders from Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia involved in the talks.
- Under China’s mediation, Thailand and Cambodia reaffirmed their ceasefire commitment at a Shanghai meeting hosted by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong.
- Escalating clashes started when a land mine explosion on July 24 wounded five Thai soldiers, leading to a ceasefire on July 28.
- Over 36 people, including 14 Thai soldiers, 14 Thai civilians, and 8 Cambodian civilians, have died since July 24, and by Wednesday some of the more than 260,000 displaced have returned home.
- The next Thailand-Cambodia Joint Boundary Commission will reconvene on August 4, 2025, to review the ceasefire and alleged violations, Cambodia will also host a border committee meeting.
