6 refugees speak out as UN-backed treaty to help people fleeing war and persecution marks 75 years

UNHCR says the campaign unites refugees and public figures behind stronger asylum protections as more than 41 million people remain displaced, the agency said.

  • Tuesday marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, created after World War II to protect displaced people. The UN refugee agency launched 'The Promise,' a global campaign urging renewed commitment to protecting those forced to flee war, violence and persecution.
  • More than 41 million refugees remain forcibly displaced worldwide, with nearly 70% hosted by low- and middle-income countries. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih said, 'Seventy-five years ago, the world made a promise to protect people forced to flee.'
  • Six refugees shared their experiences, including 88-year-old Hussniyah Ahmad Ghozlan, who fled her Palestinian village in 1948, and Hershel Greenblat, who hid from Nazis in a cave during World War II. Greenblat emphasized refugees 'worked their butts off to get what they wanted, what they needed.'
  • Early signatories include actor-humanitarians Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, and Ben Stiller, alongside Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. The coalition of business, faith and human rights leaders is calling for communities to welcome refugees and governments to support host countries.
  • Elizabeth Tan, UNHCR's director of international protection and solutions, noted the convention's core principle, 'non-refoulement,' prohibits returning people to places of persecution or harm. The campaign aims to build support for refugee protection ahead of the 2027 Global Refugee Forum.
