6 injured in stabbing attack at Kurdish demonstration in Belgium

Six Kurdish demonstrators were stabbed during a rally, with two in critical condition; four suspects have been arrested in an attempted murder investigation.

  • On Thursday evening in Antwerp, six people were stabbed during a Kurdish demonstration near Operaplein around 7.20pm, with two victims in critical condition.
  • With two to three hundred people present, the demonstration organized by Belgium's Kurdish community was initially peaceful, including families, women, and children, to denounce violence in northeastern Syria.
  • Witnesses and NavBel described suspects who mingled with demonstrators before stabbing, with emergency teams rushing six victims to hospital, and Kilic said `These men had sneaked into the demonstration and suddenly pulled out knives and began stabbing people indiscriminately`.
  • Police said Antwerp Police Zone arrested four suspects, opened an attempted-murder probe treated as "not terrorism," and urged bystanders to leave while reviewing CCTV and forensic evidence.
  • Amid regional tensions, the attack links to conflict in northeastern Syria where more than 134,000 displaced, and video footage showed a Kurdistan Workers' Party flag, prompting NavBel to call it an act of terror.
