- On Wednesday, July 30, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed a 5-month-old boy was killed by a 130-pound dog in a home near Ormond Beach, Florida.
- In explaining the circumstances, Chitwood noted the mother of the child was out celebrating her 21st birthday while the child's great-grandmother and great-aunt cared for him.
- Deputies responded around 9:49 p.m. Wednesday after a 911 call and found the infant injured next to the Great Dane-husky mix dog in a bedroom.
- After being rushed to Advent Health in Daytona Beach, the infant was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts; Volusia County Animal Services seized the dog, sheriff's office says.
- Amid countywide concern, Sheriff Chitwood said the investigation into the 5-month-old boy's dog attack is ongoing to determine if neglect was involved.
