Record-Setting Dolphin Stranding Reported on Cape Cod
IFAW said five or six dolphins died before rescuers arrived, and the team is monitoring the rest before the next low tide.
- On Monday, the International Fund for Animal Welfare responded to a mass stranding of 28-30 bottlenose dolphins at First Encounter Beach in Eastham, Massachusetts, marking the largest known stranding of the species off the state.
- Cape Cod, particularly the curved coastline around Wellfleet and Eastham, functions as a global hotspot for mass strandings where large tidal swings and broad, shallow flats make navigation difficult for dolphins.
- Although the dolphins refloated with the incoming tide, about 5-6 died before rescue teams arrived. IFAW warned, "Dolphins can become injured and exhausted during a stranding event and should never be pushed or dragged back into the water."
- IFAW vessel crews successfully guided approximately 50 dolphins south and out of Wellfleet Harbor on Monday, with teams remaining in the area to monitor survivors before the evening low tide.
- While bottlenose dolphins typically live farther offshore, IFAW reported the species has increasingly been spotted closer to Cape Cod's shores in recent years, prompting continued monitoring efforts.
