3-Year-Old Boy Dies in Hot Car After Being Left Inside by a Dept. of Human Resources Contract Worker, Police Say
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, JUL 23 – A Department of Human Resources contract worker left 3-year-old foster child in a hot car for five hours, resulting in death; the worker has been terminated, officials said.
- A Department of Human Resources contract worker left Keterrius Sparks in a private driveway vehicle from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Birmingham, where he died after hours alone.
- Transporting him for a scheduled visit, a DHR-contracted driver was supposed to return him to daycare, but he never arrived, Brittney Debruce outlined the routine.
- The Birmingham Police Department is investigating the incident, Bill Yates reported the boy was found alone inside a vehicle on Pine Tree Drive, and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene.
- The Alabama Department of Human Resources confirmed it has terminated the contracted worker, Starkes family demanded accountability, and his parents and family members are beyond distraught.
