UN says countries are willing to help fund Gaza's US$70 billion reconstruction

The UN estimates Gaza suffered 84% structural damage during the war, with $20 billion needed urgently over three years for initial recovery efforts, supported by international donors.

  • Speaking from Jerusalem, UNDP's Jaco Cilliers noted Israel's two-year war generated at least 55 million tons of rubble and damaged about 83 per cent of building structures in the Gaza Strip.
  • An initial $20 billion is needed now to kickstart recovery, UNDP said it cleared about 81,000 tons of rubble, and Israeli authorities agreed to allow 190,000 tonnes of relief supplies.
  • Following the ceasefire on Oct 13, Hamas freed the last Israeli hostages and Israel released Palestinian detainees, while UN agencies say relief deliveries are increasing but still fall short.
  • With Gaza home to 2.1 million people, the United Nations development agency prioritizes clearing rubble to enable aid delivery and locate unexploded ordnance and missing Palestinians.
