2027: 84% Of Nigerians Willing To Vote, 61% Fear Violence — Yiaga Africa
The survey found 61% fear violence and only 34% trust the electoral commission, raising concerns that insecurity and weak confidence could limit turnout.
- On Wednesday, Yiaga Africa released its third National Voting Intentions Survey, finding 84 per cent of Nigerians plan to vote in the January 16, 2027, election, though confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission has fallen to 34 per cent.
- Insecurity remains the primary barrier to participation, with 61 per cent of Nigerians fearing violence could prevent them from voting, while 71 per cent rate the economy as poor or very poor.
- Nigerians show greater trust in election technology than institutions; 49 per cent trust the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Result Viewing Portal, compared with 63 per cent expressing little or no confidence in the judiciary.
- Financial incentives persist despite electoral reforms, as 19 per cent of respondents reported receiving money to vote, while only 40 per cent of young Nigerians indicated high likelihood to participate versus 64 per cent of those aged 61 and above.
- Responding to the findings, Victoria Eta-Messi, director of the Voter Education and Publicity Department at INEC, defended the commission's progress, while Yiaga Africa urged the Federal Government to publish a national election security plan and secure anti-vote-buying pledges.
