2 Florida Deputies Airlifted After Shooting
The deputies were flown to Tampa General Hospital, and officials said there is no threat to public safety as the investigation continues.
On Thursday, two Hillsborough County deputies were shot in Ruskin, Florida, and airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister confirmed the incident occurred on West Shell Point Road with no active public threat.
The encounter followed a violent hostage situation Wednesday night when the victim reported her ex-boyfriend held her at gunpoint, threatening to kill her. She escaped Thursday morning, prompting deputies to respond to an apartment complex in Ruskin.
As deputies approached the suspect's van, he smashed a vehicle window and fired, striking one deputy in the face and another in the neck. A third deputy returned fire, hitting the 34-year-old suspect multiple times, Chronister said.
Both wounded deputies survived and were 'speaking and grateful to be alive,' Sheriff Chronister reported. The suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital; Chronister stated, 'The hand of God was with our deputies here today.'
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting, though officials have not released the identities of those involved. Chronister reiterated there is no broader threat to public safety as the scene remains under active investigation.
