Nigeria: 11 Die in Lone Accident On Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

FRSC says suspected speeding and overloading caused the crash that killed 11 people in a gold Toyota, officials said.

  • On Sunday night, a gold Toyota plunged off the Eruku bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, killing all 11 occupants. Federal Road Safety Corps Ogun Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, confirmed the incident on Monday.
  • Ogunjobi attributed the crash to suspected driving under the influence and overloading; the vehicle somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping all 10 adult males and one adult female inside as the doors locked upon impact.
  • Operatives from the FRSC Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene following the incident. Personnel, supported by local community members, dismantled the vehicle to recover the bodies, depositing them at the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo.
  • Public Education Officer Odunsi Afolabi released the statement on behalf of the command on Monday. Ogunjobi expressed condolences to the families and advised motorists on the Lagos-Abeokuta route to exercise caution, particularly during night journeys.
  • The FRSC continues to urge drivers to adhere to safety regulations to prevent such tragedies on the heavily trafficked route. Authorities emphasized that night travel requires extreme caution along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.
