Zohran Mamdani sworn in as New York City mayor at historic subway station
Zohran Mamdani took office with a private midnight oath under City Hall, becoming NYC's first Muslim mayor and youngest in a century, backed by over 10,000 volunteers.
- As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2026, Zohran Kwame Mamdani was sworn in at the decommissioned Old City Hall subway station by New York Attorney General Letitia James, becoming the city's first Muslim and South Asian mayor.
- Rising from a long shot, Mamdani won the Democratic primary 56.4 per cent to 43.6 per cent over Andrew Cuomo and then defeated Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa in November.
- Mamdani placed his hand on a Quran during the oath, using family heirloom and Schomburg Center manuscripts, and named Mike Flynn Department of Transportation commissioner.
- A public swearing-in at 1 pm will be administered by Sen. Bernie Sanders on the City Hall steps, with organizers planning a block party along Broadway's 'Canyon of Heroes' requiring advance registration.
- To implement those plans, Mamdani will need support from Albany as many proposals require tax increases, and he retained Jessica Tisch, NYPD commissioner, despite criticism from President Donald Trump.
