YouTube Will Soon Let Creators Make Shorts Using Their AI Likeness

YouTube will let creators generate AI-generated Shorts using their likeness and expand AI tools while enhancing safeguards against deepfakes and low-quality content in 2026.

  • On Wednesday, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced creators will soon be able to make Shorts using their own likeness, launching this year as part of YouTube's 2026 plans.
  • Facing competition from TikTok and Instagram Reels , Mohan said YouTube will dramatically expand AI tools this year, including game production using Google DeepMind models.
  • Shorts now averages 200 billion daily views, more than 1 million YouTube channels used AI creation tools daily in December, and YouTube has expanded likeness-detection technology for creators.
  • Creators will receive new controls to manage likeness use and removal requests, YouTube requires disclosure of altered content, and parents will soon set Shorts time limits to zero.
  • Neal Mohan wrote `AI will remain a tool for expression, not a replacement` and pledged to fight low-quality 'AI slop' while backing the NO FAKES Act, prioritizing creator safeguards.
