ENGLAND AND WALES, AUG 1 – Around 90% of young carers in England and Wales are not registered with local authorities, leaving many without legal protections or essential support, researchers say.
- In developed countries, around 12% of young people provide unpaid care, and these disadvantages are linked to increased depression and anxiety, with about 90% potentially missing statutory help.
- Families increasingly depend on young carers as the demand for unpaid care is projected to grow by 50% between 2000 and 2050 due to ageing populations, chronic illness, and medical technology.
- The FoI shared with Sky News showed 84,256 young carers known to local authorities in England and Wales, a fraction of the estimated 800,000, with many councils offering no extra support during school breaks.
- The UK Department for Education said it urges 'young carers or their families to contact their local authority for help and support', and the Welsh government emphasized support is important.
- Without intervention, we risk undermining the sustainability of health and care systems for decades and future costs include deteriorating mental health and lost opportunities.
