Oceanic Drivers of UK Summer Droughts
YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND, JUN 12 – Reservoirs in Yorkshire are at about 62% capacity, well below the 85% average, prompting possible water use restrictions this summer, officials said.
Yorkshire declared drought status on Thursday after prolonged dry weather and low reservoir levels amid the driest spring since 1893.
This drought follows a similar declaration in north-west England last month due to weeks of unusually dry weather and falling water levels.
Yorkshire Water reported reservoir stocks at 62.3%, well below the 85.5% average, and urged caution since water restrictions may be needed without significant rainfall.
Water minister Emma Hardy said she is doing everything to hold Yorkshire Water accountable for ensuring regular water supply across the region.
The drought raises environmental concerns and public calls encourage water saving and reporting leaks to help protect water levels and wildlife.
