Yemen’s Houthis call for immediate evacuation of Aden airport
The airport runway was damaged and civilian flights were diverted after the strikes, while officials said the facility had been hit six times in recent days.
On Wednesday, Iran-aligned Houthis ordered an immediate evacuation of Aden international airport, where the internationally recognized, Saudi-backed government is based.
Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed the order followed the presence of a Saudi military cargo aircraft allegedly carrying weapons at the facility.
The Houthi militia, which controls the northern capital of Sanaa, has repeatedly targeted this airport, a critical humanitarian lifeline for southern Yemen.
Intensified fighting has shattered a 2022 UN-brokered truce, as the group pushes toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic shipping chokepoint.
This conflict forms a volatile front in the wider US-Israeli war on Iran, while aid agencies warn of rapidly deteriorating conditions affecting Yemen.
Yemen's Houthi rebels on Friday sent a drone toward Medina and fired ballistic missiles at the presidential palace and airport in Aden. The Saudi-led coalition intercepted and destroyed the drone in the Medina area.
