World Food Programme to End Aid for Half a Million in Gaza Due to Funding Shortfall
The agency says it needs $450 million to sustain critical operations as cash transfers, flour boxes and community meals are reduced.
- The World Food Programme announced on October 19 that funding shortages are forcing aid cuts affecting 500,000 vulnerable people in Gaza, reducing monthly recipients from 1.6 million to 1.1 million.
- WFP acting executive director Carl Skau cited critical funding gaps and competing global demands as reasons for the cuts, noting the agency urgently needs $450m to maintain operations over six months.
- Daily hot meals from community kitchens will drop from 250,000 to 150,000, while families near the Yellow Line will receive food every other day instead of daily. "It's a disaster," said Mervat al-Satari, a displaced mother-of-five.
- WFP's September market monitor found 44 per cent of households unable to afford basic food items despite stocked markets, with residents reporting prices remain prohibitively high for most Gazans.
- Skau warned that humanitarian gains remain "fragile" despite the agency's ability to bring food into Gaza, emphasizing financial constraints—not access restrictions—are the primary barrier to sustaining current assistance levels.
