The Cycling World Championships are coming to the Netherlands in 2034. In eight years' time, Groningen and Drenthe want to turn it into an event that is ‘next level’ in terms of atmosphere and experience. At the UCI Congress in Montreal, there was plenty of pride among the organizers, and there were words of praise from the cycling union.
The Road Cycling World Championships will take place in Groningen and Drenthe in 2034.
Cycling will take place in Groningen and North Drenthe, but further details regarding dates and routes will follow.
David Lappartient Deliberately Chooses World Championships in the Netherlands: “No Risk for the UCI”
Securing the organization of a World Championship eight years in advance—that had never happened until recently. But Groningen and Drenthe had such a strong candidacy that the UCI made an exception, President David Lappartient tells our camera. In 2034, it will have been 22 years since the Cycling World Championships were last held in the Netherlands (since Valkenburg in 2012).
'Great, isn't it? Fantastic that we get to organize such a wonderful event.' Mayor Roelien Kamminga of Groningen is proud that Groningen and Drenthe will host the Cycling World Championships in 2034. Admittedly, that is two years later than originally planned, but she doesn't see that as a problem.
