The woman, who had threatened a member of the public and police officers with an ax, barricaded herself in an apartment before being subdued by police after a nine-hour standoff.
- This is the second deadly incident in Australia this year involving a taser, following the case of a police senior constable who was charged with multiple offenses for using the weapon on a 95-year-old woman, who later died. The guidelines for taser use state that it should only be used on elderly or disabled individuals in exceptional circumstances.
- The woman who died after being tasered by the police had been shot with a bean-bag round before being arrested. She was subsequently walked to an ambulance, but later died in the hospital. The cause of her death has yet to be determined pending a post-mortem examination.
