Tina Charles, WNBA Rebounding Leader, Retires From Basketball
The 37-year-old center leaves as the WNBA’s all-time leading rebounder with 4,262 boards and 8,396 regular-season points.
On Tuesday, WNBA legend Tina Charles announced her retirement from professional basketball after 15 years, sharing the news on social media.
Charles leaves the league as the all-time leading rebounder with 4,262 career rebounds, while her 8,396 points rank second behind Diana Taurasi's 10,646.
A standout at UConn, Charles led the Huskies to consecutive undefeated NCAA championships in 2009 and 2010, then earned 2010 WNBA Rookie of the Year and 2012 WNBA MVP honors.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praised Charles' leadership and community impact, noting her donation of 500 automated external defibrillators through Hopey's Heart Foundation earned her the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award twice.
Reflecting on her decision, Charles said, "Growth requires honesty," expressing that recognizing when her impact was called in a new direction represented clarity, not failure.
