Welsh Government Looking to Raise Minimum Alcohol Price Despite Mixed Results
WALES, AUG 6 – Raising the minimum unit price from 50p to 65p could reduce harmful drinkers by nearly 5,000 and lower hospital admissions, the Welsh Government says.
- Earlier this week, Welsh Government launched a consultation in Wales on maintaining the Minimum Unit Pricing at 50p or raising it to 65p per unit, open until September 29.
- Introduced in March 2020, the MUP policy aimed to tackle alcohol-related harm but high inflation has eroded the 50p rate to 39p in 2020 prices, reducing its effectiveness.
- Current data shows there are an estimated 11,243 hospital admissions attributable to alcohol annually, with 4.3% of drinkers causing 30% of admissions and 48% of alcohol-attributable deaths.
- Despite positive evidence from Scotland, in Wales there has been limited evidence of changes in purchasing and consumption behaviour, with no recent decline in alcohol-related deaths or hospital admissions.
- Across the border in England, 34 health leaders have urged the UK Government to `protect the public` by introducing minimum unit pricing .
