Raging Wildfires Spread Through Canada; Smoke to Hit US Midwest, East Coast This Week
State officials warn smoke from 800 Canadian wildfires could make Wednesday air unhealthy for sensitive groups across Michigan.
On Wednesday, July 15, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy issued a statewide air quality alert due to elevated fine particulate matter from Canadian wildfire smoke.
Over 800 active wildfires burning across Canada, particularly in Ontario, and a dozen in northern Minnesota generated the smoke; shifting winds on Tuesday directed dense plumes south into the U.S.
EGLE classified potential pollutant levels as "unhealthy for sensitive groups," with risks of reaching "unhealthy" status, driven by fine particulate "PM2.5" readings measuring particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller.
Officials recommend residents avoid strenuous outdoor activities and keep windows closed overnight; those with heart disease or asthma should watch for wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness.
Smoke plumes reached the Upper Peninsula overnight and will drift into the northern Lower Peninsula before reaching the Michigan-Indiana border Wednesday evening, according to EGLE models.
