Out-of-control wildfire near Lytton, B.C., prompts evacuation orders, Highway 1 closure

BC Wildfire Service says crews are battling a human-caused blaze that has prompted an evacuation alert and a 116.7-kilometre Highway 1 closure.

  • A wildfire was discovered about four kilometres south of Lytton, rapidly growing to 100 hectares near Saw Creek. The BC Wildfire Service reported the out-of-control blaze.
  • This incident occurs nearly five years after the 2021 Lytton Creek wildfire destroyed 90 per cent of the village and killed two people. That historic fire burned over 83,000 hectares before containment in August 2021.
  • The Lytton First Nation issued an evacuation alert for residents north of Klahkamich, while a power outage affects around 1,000 customers in the region. Highway 1 remains closed for 116.7 km between Cottonwood Road and Airport Road.
  • Multiple BCWS crews, alongside the Chilliwack Fire Department and Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department, are battling the fire. The wildfire service reports the blaze is currently burning at Rank 4 and 5, indicating highly vigorous surface and crown fire.
  • Designated as a wildfire of note, the Saw Creek blaze is anticipated to spread beyond its current perimeter due to hot and dry conditions. Officials expect additional growth as fuels remain highly susceptible to ignition.
