Wildfire near Lillooet still out of control, sees minimal growth
BC Wildfire Service said the blaze showed minimal growth overnight as helicopters and airtankers monitored steep terrain and lightning is suspected.
The Riley Creek wildfire, discovered Wednesday near Lillooet, remains out of control at 50 hectares. The BC Wildfire Service continues to monitor the blaze, located 25 km south of the community.
Lightning is the suspected cause of the fire, which burns in steep, high-elevation terrain complicating suppression efforts. This challenging geography limits direct involvement of ground crews accessing the site.
One response officer and three helicopters are assigned to the incident by BCWS. Airtankers assisted with initial assessment, but steep terrain prevented direct suppression operations.
Minimal growth occurred overnight, with BCWS reporting the blaze remains at 50 hectares. As of Friday morning, the fire was burning at Rank 1 and 2, characterized as a smouldering ground fire.
Officials from the District of Lillooet and Lillooet Fire Department are monitoring the situation. They remain in contact with emergency management partners to provide updates as the incident develops near the Fraser River.
