Wife of UPS pilot files lawsuit against GE, Boeing over plane crash
Donna Diamond alleges design, manufacturing, and maintenance failures caused the MD-11F engine separation and crash that killed 15, including her husband, UPS pilot Dana Diamond.
- Following the Feb. 25 complaint, Donna Diamond, widow of Dana Justin Diamond, filed against Boeing Co., General Electric Co. and VT San Antonio Aerospace in Jefferson Circuit Court.
- Maintenance records show a cracked center wing fuel tank and corrosion during San Antonio, Texas, work from Sept. 3 to Oct. 18, while a Boeing Service Letter from Feb. 7, 2011, noted four prior bearing race failures.
- The NTSB's preliminary report found fatigue cracks and overstress failure across the bearing race that attached the left engine, which then separated and caught fire during takeoff.
- Donna Diamond is seeking punitive damages and a jury trial; court summons were issued Feb. 25 for the wrongful death lawsuit involving 15 people who died and 23 injured.
- Amid ongoing probes and suits, multiple pending lawsuits involve the National Transportation Safety Board helping retrieve records from the over six weeks the MD-11F spent on the ground, while UPS retired its fleet and the FAA issued a directive to ground planes for inspection.
