Same-sex marriage, surname support get Japan election tech leg-up
Voters in Japan now can find out whether candidates support same-sex marriage and separate surnames for married couples by simply pointing a smartphone camera at campaign posters for the upcoming national upper house election.
Ahead of the House of Councillors election on Sunday, July 20th, we asked Professor Yashiro Okano of Doshisha University, who studies politics, feminism, and care, to answer a number of questions related to the election. If you don't understand politics or elections well, "the first thing to do is complain" -- she gives us some "hints" for voting while unraveling the background to the exclusion of women from the political arena.
