Why do energy companies need a stock exchange?

The Prime Minister's words that state-owned companies are not there to make a profit should not surprise anyone. In theory, stock market investors should get used to the fact that politicians like to swing the prices of energy companies, and the fact that these companies do not always have to be guided by profit is written into their statutes.
