Philippines begins clean-up after powerful twin quakes
PHIVOLCS recorded 498 aftershocks following two major quakes near Davao Oriental and Davao del Norte, part of recurring seismic activity along the Philippine Trench.
- PHIVOLCS recorded a magnitude 7.4 quake near Manay at 9:43 a.m. and a magnitude 6.8 quake at 7:12 p.m. on Friday, which it called a doublet.
- Movement along the Philippine Trench prompted both quakes, and PHIVOLCS noted similar doublets on May 17, 1992, and December 2, 2023.
- Philippine authorities reported at least eight killed as PHIVOLCS recorded more than 300 aftershocks and 498 as of 9 p.m., with over 200 patients moved to tents outside Manay government hospital.
- President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered relief operations, and Presidential Communications Office secretary Dave Gomez said `The President's paramount concern is the safety and well-being of our people in the earthquake struck areas`, with some 1.8 million people sheltering outdoors.
- The archipelago sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," which PHIVOLCS said has a history of deadly quakes, including the 1976 Mindanao 8.0 disaster, and is still recovering from the September 30, 2025 magnitude 6.9 Cebu quake.
