The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, announced that Lebanon formally invited the 27 countries to establish a new mission in the country, in the face of the withdrawal of UNIFIL in 2027. In Beirut, Kallas confirmed that the planning of the European mission has been completed and that the invitation of the Lebanese authorities makes it possible to move forward with its establishment.
EU Foreign Policy Officer Kaya Callas announced that we had agreed with Lebanon to establish a European force that had nothing to do with the situation in the south, and would not be a substitute for UNIFIL. She stressed that Lebanon must control its entire territory, which means disarming Hizbullah, and we do not want to see a security vacuum in its south.
