How FAA Flight Cuts Could Affect PDX and Other Major Airports
The Federal Aviation Administration will cut flights by 10% at 40 busiest airports due to unpaid air traffic controllers amid the longest U.S. government shutdown.
- On Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration announced plans to cut air traffic by 10% at 40 high-volume U.S. airports, starting Friday, Nov. 7 and reaching full reductions next week.
- The reductions stem from the federal government shutdown, which has left air traffic controllers working without pay since early October, causing staffing shortages and flight delays.
- According to Airports Council International- North America, the 40 busiest airports include Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport , and John F. Kennedy International Airport ; cuts apply to flights scheduled from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. while international flights are exempt.
- Airlines are offering refunds or rebooking options for impacted customers, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned, `I think it's going to lead to more cancellations, but we are going to work with the airlines to do this in a systematic way.`
- Framed as a safety measure, the FAA said the 10% reductions aim to maintain traveler safety if the shutdown continues, and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency will release the list on Thursday and meet with airline executives.
